Volunteering

A volunteer is someone who serves in a community or for the benefit of natural environment primarily because they choose to do so. By definition, a volunteer worker does not get paid or receive compensation for services rendered. Serving community makes ones own life better. The benefits people get from being with other people, staying active, and above all having a sense of the value of ourselves in society that may not be as clear in other areas of life.

Racine Public Library bookshelf upkeep
Do you like a clean and orderly environment? You can help us keep the library an inviting place to come by dusting our bookshelves. That doesn't sound exciting but it would be immensely helpful. From once a week to once a month or any hours that you can contribute. This position sometimes includes shifting books and shelf reading.

Support help to Racine Public Library Program Coordinator
Is "busy work" your thing? Do you like variety in your tasks? As the support help to the library's program coordinator tasks will include preparing craft materials and helping children with crafts during programs, distributing program fliers to the community, copying, folding or collating promotional material, decorating bulletin boards, and window painting among others.

Office Assistant-School area
Assist teacher in filing, testing, posting progress reports on computer and other office duties. Work with students selecting study materials, based on practice exams. Most students are ABE/GED students.

Tutors needed to act as role models for inmates. Interact one-on-one and/or support groups with inmates within the prison setting. Should be confident, a good communicator and non-judgmental.

Youth Council Member
Provide prevention and intervention services to end violence. It includes a Youth Board which assists and advises the organization.

Beautification at River Bend
Enjoy the fresh air at River Bend while you help us beautify our Nature Center! Our trails need clearing, firewood needs stacking, windows need washing, educational displays need need dusting, etc. There are projects suitable for everyone - big or small, indoors or out.

Dress for Success/Suitings
We need women who would be willing to help low income, abused, or homeless women pick out outfits that they can wear to job interviews. This is a program under the "Women Out Of Poverty Initiative". The suitings are done by appointment, this opportunity is very flexible.

Earth Day Participant 2009
Volunteers will be needed for next years Earth Day activities. Volunteers will help to beautify the city. Removal of invasive species, weeds and general removal of litter. This event occurred on April 26, 2008 and occurs annually at the end of April/May. Mark your calendar for next years event.

Adopt-a-Beach - Lake Michigan
Volunteers (adopters) commit up to five visit per year and use Alliance for the Great Lakes' forms to collect data: Give the beach ( Zoo, North, Samuel Meyers,& 14th Street) a good look, collect litter, recycle or dispose of it properly. Volunteers needed for registration, putting up signs and other volunteer jobs - This is an annual opportunity that takes place on a Sunday in October.

Volunteer Guardian
Volunteer guardians have the responsibility to make health and placement decisions on behalf of the ward. The needs of the ward are matched with the abilities of the guardian. Computer Repairing and Refurbishing
We need persons who have a desire to work on computers and/or computer software. We provide a nice work area and tools that will allow you to learn about and fix computers and software. These computers help churches. non-profits, schools. Come and help your community get refurbished computers.

Assist librarian by putting away books alphabetically or in numerical order. Task is easy to learn. Thirty minutes or more per week.

Elementary School Volunteer
Listen to children read, work with underachievers, help with handwriting practice, help students make up missed work, talk to children and be their friend. Mon-Fri from 9-10.30 am and Thursday 1-2 pm.

Repair Broken Toys
Volunteers will preform many tasks that involve the repair or refurbishing of of toys, bicycles and other items. We are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8 am to 11:30 am.

Artfair booth volunteers
Careers Industries' Integrated Day Services Department is looking for volunteers to help man its booth at the Monument Square on the Lake Art Fair on Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, at the Racine Festival Park. IDS has a thriving art program with the art created by the participants with disabilities being displayed and sold at area art fairs and other locations.
