Lake Michigan exerts an irresistible pull on anyone who encounters it. Looking out over the Lake from Racine you seen an endless expanse of water streching out past the horizon. The secrets of countless shipwrecks are hidden beneath the waves.
To call Lake Michigan a Lake is somewhat misleading. It is the only Great Lake totally within the United States. It is the second largest Great Lake by volume and is the third largest Great Lake by surface area. It is also the sixth largest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Michigan is so Large it would be better to think of it as an inland sea rather than a lake.
Carved by the movement of glaciers during the ice age,. Lake Michigan is 307 miles long and 118 miles wide at its longest and widest points. The maximum depth is 925 feet with an average depth of 279 feet.
The Lake Michigan shoreline alone Racine has much to offer. The historic Lighthouse stands guard over the lake from Wind Point, Scenic vistas from Cliffside Park, North Beach offers cool relief in the summer.
The reefpoint Marina, Harbor and Root Rive offers access to boaters. Racine is an excellent place to visit by boat. Our many Marinas offer slips to transients.
Some of the best sport fishing for salmon, trout, steelhead, coho, yellow perch, chinook, lake trout, and brown trout, takes place both off the Racine Shoreline and by the Racine Reef areas of the Lake. Either fishing from the shore or from a charter fishing boat, Lake Michigan offers the best freshwater fishing.
Each year in the middle of July, Racine hosts the Big Fish Bash (Formerly known as Salmon-A-Rama), the largest freshwater fishing contest in the world. Each year the event draws tens of thousands of visitors. Not only a fishing tournament, the Big Fish Bash is an all around community event featuring a number of family activities, food, drinks and music.
