Along the shores of the lake there streches a low steep sandy cliff, and upon its summit stands the city of Racine. Looking out on the great lake, there is little at first to tell you that you are not standing on the shore of the ocean. There is no trace of tide, and the air brings with it no savour of the salt sea; but the horizon on every side is bounded by water alone. Great ships with snow white sails may be seen passing into the far distance; and, when the wind blows from the lake, the waves roll in upon the coast with a deep roar and splash, as though they had been driven across the ocean.
