The ethnic pioneer heritage of the Heartland comes to life at Old World Wisconsin, the Midwest's largest outdoor living history museum. Pioneers dressed in period clothing plow, cook, and discuss their lives on 10 working immigrant farms, in an Ethnic Crossroads Village and an African-American Pioneer Area. The 576-acre museum in the Kettle Moraine State Forest, 12 miles north of Elkhorn, also features heirloom gardens, historic breeds of farm animals and the Aldo Leopold Environmental History Trail. Open May 1 through October 31, and in December for Christmas events.
